What is Sciatica?

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It starts in your lower back and splits to run through your hips, buttocks, legs, and feet on both sides.

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. Typically, sciatica affects only one side of your body.

Sciatica usually starts with a herniated disk in your lumbar (lower) spine, bone spur, or narrowing of the spine that compresses part of the nerve. This causes inflammation, pain, and often numbness in the affected leg.

Possible Causes For Sciatica Pain

  • Herniated disks and bone spurs are the most common causes of sciatica
  • Age-related changes to your spine
  • Excess Body Weight increases stress on your spine possibly leading to spinal changes that lead to sciatica pain
  • Sedentary lifestyle:  sitting for prolonged periods of time or have a sedentary lifestyle increases the chances of experiencing sciatica pain
  • Health Issues. Example: Diabetes affects the way your body uses blood sugar present in your body increasing your risk of nerve damage.
