It’s exciting to witness how our perspective continues to evolve when it comes to health and wellness. Luckily we’re becoming more conscious of the impact we make on Planet Earth and how it affects our well-being. Knowing your doshas or Ayurvedic body type will help you get a better understanding of how external and internal patterns and cycles can improve your health and overall wellness in all aspects of your life.

If our ancestors had the answers to co-existing with nature to bring harmony, balance and wellness… Why is it taking us this long to re-discover this information?

It’s not coincidence that many people are learning how yoga and other mind/ body practices can help restore inner/outer balance. But how many have heard about Ayurveda and the positive impact this ancient practice can have in our health?

Ayurveda

Did you know that Yoga and Ayurveda go hand and hand? It’s often said that Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga.

Ayurveda originated in India over 5000 years ago and it’s often translated as the “Science of Life”. Many describe Ayurveda as “The Mother of All Healing” and others describe it as practices for longevity. Ayurveda originally was taught and passed down orally from teachers to their disciples. It’s hard to believe that only a few thousands years ago some of the teachings of Ayurveda were put into print.

Ayurveda have impacted other Holistic approaches that are very popular today. Therapies like homeopathy and Polarity have their roots in Ayurvedic principles. 

The main difference between Ayurveda (Eastern Medicine) and the Western Medicine is that Ayurveda seeks to prevent illnesses or imbalances not just cure them. 5 Ayurvedic tips to relieve pain

Further more, Ayurveda’s main focus is in maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Hence why yoga, meditation,  diet, awareness, and use of natural remedies are part of any Ayurvedic protocol.  When you are balanced and healthy, this sense of well-being is reflected in your body, relationships and even your work or business.

What’s Your Dosha? 

Ayurveda states that each individual has a unique constitution or specific combination of basic energies called Doshas. So each individual has a unique ratio combination of these energies. You can think of them as your unique blue print and no blue prints are exactly alike. 

The Three Doshas are:

Each dosha has general mental, emotional and physical characteristics that influence each individual differently. This influence varies based on your unique combination that forms your constitution.

This emotional, physical and mental combination can become unbalanced by diet, emotional or physical stress, bad choices, work, weather, etc.

The best way to know your unique Dosha combination is to see an Ayurvedic practitioner. If you cannot find one and you would like to have a general idea, you could take a few Ayurvedic tests found in:

I suggest searching and taking different sources for dosha quizzes and average the results out. Keep in mind the results may not be 100% accurate.

Restoring Your Health

How can you restore your inner balance and improve your health?

The answer lies on your original constitution determined at the time of conception (Pakriti) and knowing your tendencies to imbalance (Vikriti). The more balanced your doshas the healthier you are physically, emotionally, mentally. 

The same applies to opposite scenario. The more tendencies you have towards imbalances the more the doshas become out of balance compromising your overall health. 

Thankfully, Ayurveda is becoming more popular and many yoga teachers are studying Ayurvedic principles. I have been including simple Ayurvedic practices in my daily routine for years which has help me create more balance in my life. Thanks to my intensive AyurYoga training at the Ayurveda Institute; I have a better understanding on how Yoga and Ayurveda can help me and how I can help others make positive changes in their lives.

Ayurveda: The Science of Self Healing: A Practical Guide is one of my favorite books written by one of my teachers, Dr. Lad. This book is a very easy read and it will help you learn more about this ancient health giving practice. 

You can contact your local Ayurveda practitioner or search for Yoga teachers that have some type of training in Ayurveda.  This is a great way to help you combine these two amazing practices for optimal results.
